Toh-Baiyee (Mortar)

The weavers at the Baba Tree compound eat, pray and love together. "Toh" is a word in Gurune, the local language in Northern Ghana, which translates to the large wooden mortars that are used to pound or grind local grains and starches in this region.

The Toh-Baiyee basket was born from our admiration of the intricate food preparation process we observe as part of daily life of the Fra Fra people who live across Bolgatonga. The rituals involved in cooking local cuisine reflect community, culture and aged old traditions. Exactly like our baskets.

The weaver of this basket will receive 15% of the retail price as a commission in addition to what they were already paid for weaving the basket.
